Hosted by Terry Gross for 49 years, Tonya joined the show in 2023, bringing her warmth and deeply inquisitive style to the show, convening conversations with authors, directors, producers, performers and investigative journalists.

Tonya is an Emmy-award-winning television news producer and correspondent. She has a keen ability to identify social issues that are rising to the surface of our consciousness and collective conversation.
As a correspondent for Al Jazeera America, she was one of the first journalists to follow the issue of trans rights for people under 18. For two years, she followed a middle schooler and their family in their choice to transition. She also covered the integration of women submariners into the military and the movement to legalize marijuana in Washington State, Colorado, and Oregon.

Tonya is also the host and creator of the award-winning podcast Truth Be Told with Tonya Mosley, a space for some of the greatest thinkers of our time to explore issues at the heart of what it means to be human: love, hate, isolation, and forgiveness.
Tonya is also the host and creator of She Has A Name, an acclaimed investigative audio documentary about the 1987 disappearance of her sister Anita.

Tonya Mosley is an Emmy award-winning talk show host, writer, and documentarian.
She co-hosts NPR’s long-form interview show Fresh Air, the award-winning podcast Truth Be Told, and the acclaimed audio documentary She Has A Name.. She has interviewed heads of state, including Vice President Kamala Harris, Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, artists, celebrities, and authors.
Previously, Tonya was the co-host of NPR’s midday program Here & Now, where she led daily coverage during the Trump administration, the pandemic, and the racial reckoning of 2021. On January 6, 2021, she hosted live NPR special coverage of the insurrection as it was happening. She also guided listeners through special live coverage of the Donald Trump impeachment hearings and the funeral of Congressman John Lewis. For over a decade, Tonya served as an award-winning television producer, reporter, correspondent, and anchor for several outlets, including Al Jazeera America.
Known for her curious and deeply human approach to storytelling and interviewing, Tonya has won several awards for her journalism, including two Webby Awards for Best Documentary and Best Advice Podcasts, a 2016 Emmy Award for her PBS series “Beyond Ferguson,” and an Edward R. Murrow and NABJ Award for the 4 part hour-long series “Black In Seattle.” In 2015, Tonya was awarded the John S. Knight Fellowship at Stanford University, where she co-created a curriculum for journalists on the implications of implicit bias. She is also a graduate of The Partnership Leadership Program.
Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Tonya mentors young journalists and media makers for the International Women’s Media Foundation, the National Press Foundation, the Boston Review Fellowship, and the NPR Emerging Leaders Pipeline.
